Will Hellboy live up to his name?
Mike Mignola–the Eisner Award-winning creator of the famed half-demon–is looking forward to the upcoming Hellboy: The Crooked Man being a real horror film. Which sounds like good news for all Helllboy fans.
The Millennium Media remake of Hellboy–expected to start shooting in Bulgaria very soon–is directed by Brian Taylor from a screenplay by MIgnola and Chris Golden. The cast includes Jack Kesy in the title role, alongside Adeline Rudolph and Jefferson White.
The new film finds Hellboy stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia with a rookie BPRD agent, where they discover a small community “haunted by witches–led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man,” according to the brief synopsis.
And, from what Mignola recently told Variety, this entry in the franchise connects to its horror roots. The writer/artist said Taylor’s intention is “to make a horror movie–so that’ll be nice. I read a new draft of the screenplay yesterday, and it’s definitely R-rated. It’s the first Hellboy script that I read and I thought, ‘Oh, it’s a horror movie’.”
Mignola added that the Crooked Man comic “is my personal favorite. I think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written. And it was beautifully illustrated by Richard Corben.”
This new movie, Mignola said, “is not the Hellboy origin. It’s not Hellboy saving the world. It’s not huge. It;s a subtle, dark, little folk horror story.”
Hellboy debuted in San Diego Comic-Con Comics No. 2 back in 1993 before moving on to his own one-shot comics and miniseries. The character has appeared in three live-action films–two starring Ron Perlman (2004 and 2008) and a 2019 reboot with David Harbour.
