Mike Flanagan is in talks to direct the next Exorcist film for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, according to a report on Deadline.

Flanagan is known for his work on genre titles such as The Haunting on Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, Oculus, Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald’s Game, and Doctor Sleep.

Although the film earned $137 million at the box office against a budget of $30 million, it was deemed a disappointment as the movie studio was expecting more. Critics panned the film as it currently holds a 22% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the leading online aggregator of movie reviews from critics.

In July of 2021 Universal and Blumhouse had purchased the rights to The Exorcist and planned a trilogy with David Gordon Green helming all three. Well, things didn’t work out as planned and Green stepped down in January, leading to Flanagan being in talks to take over.
