This giant shark has a huge appetite for box office receipts.
Meg 2: The Trench–the sequel to the 2018 shark thriller–has cut a wide swatch through the box office for the last month and, after an impressive fifth week, is now knocking on the door of a $300-million global bonanza.
The PG-13 film–directed by Ben Wheatley from a screenplay by Dean Georgaris and Jon Hoebler–pulled down $8.5 million worldwide this weekend, bringing its total take to $297 million for five weeks. The feature reportedly has performed especially well in Asia and China.
The sequel follows Jonas Taylor (the returning Jason Statham) as he leads a research team on an exploratory dive that “spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation forces them into a battle for survival–pitted against prehistoric sharks.”
