Marvel Will Debut ‘Planet Of The Apes’ Comics Next Year

Marvel fans should go ape over this news.

Starting next year, Marvel Comics–thanks to parent company Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019–will roll out a brand-new series of books based on the iconic Planet of the Apes film franchise. Check out the teaser cover by Salvador Larroca–courtesy of comicbook.com–on this page.

This won’t be the first time Marvel has adapted the Apes films to the four-color world. Marvel first published Planet of The Apes comics way back in 1974, and followed those up with Adventures on the Planet of the Apes books in 1975.

Details on the upcoming Marvel titles, collections, reprints and creative teams will be shared at a later date.

The original 1968 Planet of the Apes film–directed by Franklin J. Schaffner from a screenplay by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling–stars Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter and Maurice Evans. The groundbreaking film–which boasts arguably the greatest twist ending in cinematic history–follows an astronaut crew that crash-lands on a strange planet in the distant future where apes are the dominant species.

The original film series–which included four sequels–was followed by Tim Burton’s 2001 remake and a reboot series that began with Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011.
