A “perfect storm” of genre talent has come together in a new tech/horror thriller.
M3GAN–based on a story by James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring)–is being brought to the big screen by Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures and Wan’s Atomic Monster. Nothing much new on the film has been leaked since last summer, but now Deadline reports that it will hit theaters in a year–Jan. 13, 2023.
The thriller–directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant)–follows Gemma, played by Allison Williams (Get Out), who is described as “a brilliant roboticist at a toy company who uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN–a lifelike doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally.”
After gaining custody of her orphaned niece, Gemma enlists the help of the M3GAN prototype, “a decision that has unimaginable consequences.” Ronny Chieng (Shang–Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) stars alongside Williams.
