Horror fans embrace the next killer doll.
M3GAN–the latest Blumhouse-Universal horror entry–is well on its way to its projected $20-million opening weekend, as the film raked in a cool $2.75 million during its Thursday previews, according to a report on Deadline.
The movie–officially opening today at more than 3,500 theaters–has earned an impressive 95 percent from Rotten Tomatoes, and is expected to place second this weekend to the Avatar sequel blockbuster.
M3GAN–based on an original James Wan story–is directed by Gerard Johnstone from a screenplay by Akela Cooper.
The storyline follows Gemma (Allison Williams), a roboticist at a toy company who uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android)–a lifelike doll that’s programmed to be “a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally,” according to the synopsis.
But, when Gemma gains custody of her orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw) and uses M3GAN to help the child cope with the death of her parents, things take a horrific turn. The android quickly becomes “increasingly more independent and violent towards anyone who poses a threat to Cady.”
The cast also includes Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Lori Dungey and Stephanie Garneau-Moriten.
