This week Mike Mignola brings horror comic fans Koshchei The Deathless, the first of a six-part mini- series from Dark Horse comics. Teaming up with Ben Stenback and Dave Stewart, Mignola brings back Hellboy’s immortal rival in what proves to be an engaging addition to Mignolaverse for 2018.
With the introductory issue to this series giving the background and framework for the series, it doesn’t layout the plot in a formulaic or bland way. The story opens with a bang, literally. We see Koshchei in battle with Hellboy, but as the plot shifts, the tale of his backstory is told through his own eyes in a conversational tone to Hellboy. This is one of the many way Mignola brilliantly draws the reader into the Koshchei The Deathless series, by giving Koshchei humanity and depth. The allows the reader to actually care more about this character and his struggle with good versus evil.
The interior artwork by Ben Stenbeck and Dave Stewart, both no strangers to the world of Hellboy, is top notch. The creature creation and tones used are on point, creepy and moody enough to satisfy horror comic fans.
With Koshchei The Deathless, Mike Mignola provides a captivating entry way into another series which will leave horror comic readers preordering issue two. You can pick up the first issue on January 3rd.
