It’s been said there’s a fine line between comedy and horror, and Kevin James will test that theory in a new thriller slated for release on digital platforms and VOD in June.
James–best known for his comedic efforts on television (The King of Queens and Kevin Can Wait) and film (Paul Blatt: Mall Cop)–will star in the upcoming Becky, as reported by comingsoon.net.
Quiver Distribution and Redbox Entertainment have teamed up to acquire North American rights to the movie directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion.
The screenplay was handled by Nick Morris and Lane and Ruckus Skye. The film is produced by Jordan Yale Levine, Jordan Beckerman and Russ Posternak, through their Yale Productions banner, along with Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight.
The movie follows a 14-year-old girl who is brought to a lakeside house for a weekend getaway by her father who wants to reconnect with her following her mother’s death. But the father’s best-laid plans soon turn into a bloody nightmare.
A group of convicts on the lam–led by Dominick (James)–stumbles across the vacation house and terrorizes father and daughter. And it’s Becky who takes the bull by the horns and turns the tables on their attackers.
James, obviously looking for a completely different role from his usual comedic fare, portrays the leader of the hardened criminals. The title character is played by the young Lulu Wilson (Annabelle: Creation).
James reportedly replaced Simon Pegg–who made his bones as Scotty in the recent Star Trek reboots and in Shaun of the Dead–when the actor had to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts.
The movie’s ensemble cast also includes Amanda Brugel, Robert Maillet and Joel McHale.
Quiver co-president Berry Meyerowitz heaped praise on both James and Wilson for their acting chops. “Kevin delivers a chilling performance in his first villainous role, especially playing against rising star Lulu Wilson in an epic head-to-head battle. We are thrilled to bring Becky to audiences so they can see Kevin in a whole new light,” he said in a statement.
