Kevin Bacon Cast As Baddie In ‘The Toxic Avenger’ Reboot

It looks like the rumor that had Elijah Wood trading his Frodo image for a villain’s sneer in the remake of 1984’s The Toxic Avenger was just that–a rumor.

But now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, veteran actor Kevin Bacon will be the bad guy who will duke it out with Peter Dinklage’s version of the deformed do-gooder in the Legendary Entertainment film.

Joining Bacon and Dinklage (of Game of Thrones fame) in the film are Jacob Tremblay (Doctor Sleep) as Toxie’s son and Taylour Paige (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) as the female lead.

Bacon is no stranger to wearing the black hat in films. He played Sean Nokes, a sadistic guard in a boys’ home, in 1996’s Sleepers; Jacques, a crooked strip club owner, in 2010’s Super; and Sebastian Shaw, leader of the Hellfire Club, in 2011’s XMenFirst Class.

This new version of The Toxic Avenger–from writer/director Macon Blair–will be based on the Troma Entertainment original, with a few changes. The film will follow Winston, “a janitor who is diagnosed with a terminal illness that can only be cured by an expensive treatment his employer refuses to pay for.”

So, Winston decides to rob the company, but instead falls into “a pit of toxic waste and is transformed into a monster who sets out to do good and to get back at all the people who have wronged him.”

The reboot–scheduled to start production in Bulgaria later this month–is produced by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. A release date has yet to be announced.
