Jordan Peele On Filmmaking: “You’ve Got To Listen”

by Thomas Tuna

The man behind Nope is all about watching and learning.

Jordan Peele–who followed up his success with Get Out and Us with this year’s Nope–has a unique way of approaching new projects: He watches other films, thinks a lot and always listens.

During a recent interview with Empire, the Oscar winner said he already has “a few ideas percolating” for his next film, but added that he needs “to sink into the world a bit and allow the world to tell me which one is the next one.”

So, over the next few months, Peele said he’ll be “sitting, watching, waiting, looking at my coffee. If you watch good films, you’ll get inspired. That works for me.”

Sometimes, he added “inspiration comes instantly. Sometimes, it comes in a long time. I need to do some watching and listening–you can’t just be always expressing yourself. You’ve got to listen.”

Looking at the horror genre, Peele has said “the best and scariest monsters are human beings, and what we are capable of, especially when we get together. Each of my movies is about a different social demon.”

The R-rated Nope–which recently passed the $100-million mark at the domestic box office–is a film that puts audiences “in the immersive experience of being in the presence of of a UFO,” Peele said. “I wanted to make a spectacle.”
