‘Joker’ Sequel Starts Shooting, Unveils First Bizarre Image

by Thomas Tuna

Now, that’s what you call a close shave.

Joker: Folie a Deux (“madness shared by two”)–the much-anticipated follow-up to the 2019 box office smash–is in front of the cameras now, and the first offbeat image has arrived, thanks to returning director Todd Phillips.

The filmmaker this week posted a shot on his Instagram account of star Joaquin Phoenix getting a shave in what appears to be Arkham Asylum. The tagline reads: “Day 1. Our boy.” Guess that says it all.

The sequel–helmed by Phillips from a screenplay he wrote with Scott Silver–is set for a theatrical release Oct. 4, 2024–so there’s plenty of time for updates, other images and trailers.

The Warner Bros. and DC Films feature returns Phoenix to his Oscar-winning title role–along with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, Harry Lawtey, Jacob Lofland, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson. The sequel reportedly will feature musical elements (hence Gaga) and will be set mostly in Arkham.

The original Joker follows failed clown and aspiring stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck, whose descent into madness leads him to the persona of the Joker. The film was the first R-rated movie to earn more than $1 billion at the box office.
