‘Joker’ Sequel Adds Another Actor To Ensemble Cast

The Joker is filling his deck.

Joker: Folie a Deux–the hoped-for sequel to the 2019 box office smash–this week added another actor to the mix, according to a report on Deadline.

Brendan Gleeson (the Harry Potter franchise) has signed on in an undisclosed role to play opposite star Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga and Zazie Beetz. The sequel–slated to start shooting in December–has a theatrical release date of Oct. 4, 2024.

In the film–from director Todd Phillips (who wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver)–Phoenix will reprise his Oscar-winning lead role, Gaga will play Harley Quinn and Beetz will return as Sophie Dumond.

The storyline reportedly will have musical elements (Gaga’s casting is a tipoff) and will be set in Arkham Asylum, where Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) was left at the conclusion of the first film.

The original Joker–starring Phoenix, Beetz, Robert De Niro and Frances Conroy–follows failed clown and aspiring stand-up comedian Fleck, whose descent into insanity leads him to the persona of the Joker. The film–which earned Phoenix a Best Actor Academy Award–became the first R-rated film to earn more than $1 billion at the box office.
