Jessica Rothe is All For a ‘Happy Death Day’ and ‘Freaky’ Crossover Film

by Mark McCurley

In the film series that is all about repetition, Jessica Rothe who has starred in both Happy Death Day films told The Hollywood Reporter she would love a showdown with her character Tree Gelbman and Kathryn Newton’s Butcher character from Freaky.

Director Christopher Landon’s latest slasher-comedy he said happens to take place in the same universe as the Happy Death Day movies. In these films, ordinary people find themelves in very unusual situations.

Happy Death Day is about a college student (Rothe) stuck in a time loop of dying and waking up the next morning reliving the same day all over again until she finally solves her own murder. With Freaky, a teenage girl (Newton) unintentionally switches bodies with a middle-aged male serial killer (Vince Vaughn) by the powers of a mystical dagger.

Rothe said she believes a crossover where the two characters clash is the way to go because Newton’s Butcher carries so much strength, power and attitude.

A third Happy Death Day film is being developed by Landon and Jason Blum of Blumhouse Pictures although has yet to be greenlit by Universal Studios. Similarly, Freaky does not have an official sequel in the works but Landon and Blum have expressed deep interest in pursuing one.
