Jenna Ortega: My ‘Scream 6’ Character Will Be Fleshed Out

by Thomas Tuna

More acting, less screaming?

Jenna Ortega–currently starring in the hit Netflix series Wednesday–will reprise her role as Tara Carpenter in the next Scream installment, and the young actor said that experience was an improvement on her appearance in the fifth entry in the franchise.

Ortega–during a recent interview on Deadline’s 20 Questions: On Deadline podcast–said she enjoyed filming Scream 6 since her part was more three-dimensional this time around.

“It was great for me,” Ortega said, “because, in the fifth installment, I only really shot with Ghostface, and I was only screaming and crying on the floor. So, in this next one, I got to interact with my castmates, and I had the chance to give her a personality. And that was really fun for me.”

In another interview, Ortega also addressed the absence of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) in this next film. “There’s so much going on in this one, and it’s so action-heavy and so gore-heavy that I think you’re gonna be almost distracted,” she said. “But obviously, we respect her and want the best for her. She’s missed and thought of.”

Scream 6–which hits theaters March 10, 2023–is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

Ortega will be joined in the cast by veterans Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding–along with newcomers Dermot Mulroney, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra and Henry Czerny.

The film will follow the four survivors of the last Ghostface killings, “as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.” And that journey takes them to New York City–where Ghostface will have so many more victims to choose from.
