The first summer horror blockbuster is about to get bigger and better.
Jaws–Steven Spielberg’s 1975 masterpiece about the meanest damn shark ever–is heading to the big screen again starting Sept. 2. And, this time, the classic film will be on IMAX and RealD 3D screens nationwide for the first time, according to a report on Deadline.
As all horror fans (and film fans) know, Jaws–based on the Peter Benchley novel–tells the heart-stopping story of a great white shark terrorizing Amity Island–and the efforts of the local police chief, a young marine biologist and a seasoned shark hunter to stop its reign of terror.
The film–recognized as one of the most compelling horror thrillers of all time–was nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, and won three Oscars, including one for John Williams’ unforgettable score.
RealD chief executive Travis Reed said Jaws “redefined what it means to be a summer blockbuster, and now for the first time, audiences can experience Steven Spielberg’s classic in 3D. Everything that made Jaws a sensation for nearly 50 years will be enhanced in RealD 3D.”
On a related note, another Spielberg gem–E.T. The Extra=Terrestrial–will show on IMAX screens nationwide starting Aug. 12, in celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary.
