Jason Blum Confirms Working With David Gordon Green On Sequel To ‘The Exorcist’

David Gordon Green must be a serious multi-tasker.

Green–currently wrapping up the iconic Halloween franchise–has been linked with the upcoming Blumhouse Productions/Morgan Creek Entertainment sequel to 1973’s groundbreaking The Exorcist, as reported by JoBlo.com. And this news comes straight from Blumhouse head honcho Jason Blum.

This team-up was brought to light late last year–as reported here in Horror News Network–and now Blum says it’s moving forward. “I think it’s going to pleasantly surprise all the skeptics out there,” Blum said during a recent interview. “We had a lot of skeptics about Halloween and David turned them around, and I think he’s going to turn it around with The Exorcist.”

Keeping in mind that many of the fans who will go to see the sequel will not have seen the original, Blum said, “I want to make a movie that works for both (audiences). I want to make a movie for people who know and love the first Exorcist and are furious that we’re doing this, but somehow drag themselves to the theater. I want them to come out happy.”

But, he added, he also wants to make a film “that people who’ve never heard of The Exorcist really enjoy. I think David did that with Halloween. I think he’ll do that with The Exorcist also.” Green, as horror fans know, wrote and directed 2018’s Halloween, this year’s Halloween Kills and next year’s Halloween Ends.

Blum did not reveal details on the plot, casting or production schedules for the proposed sequel, but those announcements are bound to come sooner rather than later.

The original The Exorcist–directed by William Friedkin from a screenplay by William Peter Blatty–follows a tormented mother’s battle to rescue her 12-year-old daughter from a demonic possession through a terrifying exorcism performed by two priests. The first horror film to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, the movie starred Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb, Jason Miller and Linda Blair.

With so many questions still be answered about this sequel, keep reading Horror News Network for all updates on this new vision for The Exorcist.
