James Winburn–the stunt double in the iconic Michael Myers mask in the original 1978 Halloween–has passed away after an undisclosed illness, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. Winburn was 85.
Nick Castle portrayed the maniacal killer in that first film, but Winburn was instrumental in several of the more dangerous scenes–including one that saw Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) shoot Myers several times before The Shape fell off a balcony.
The horror classic was hardly the sum total of Winburn’s on-screen career. He performed stunt work in more than 70 other films–including Escape from New York, The Night Stalker and TRON. Winburn also had acting roles in Cagney & Lacey, Hunter and Island of Witches.
Winburn also directed three films: Evil Altar (1988), The Death Merchant (1991) and Miami Beach Corps (1993).
The staff of Horror News Network extends its condolences to Winburn’s family, friends and colleagues.
