‘Invisible Man’ Poster Sells for $182,400 at Heritage Auctions

by Rob Caprilozzi

A rare movie poster of the 1933 Universal classic The invisible Man sold for a whopping $182,400 at public auction Saturday night. Early speculation had the poster pegged at about $125,000 but bidders quickly surpassed that amount.

“Even in these troubled economic and uncertain times, this was a big success,” said Grey Smith, Director of Posters at Heritage Auctions.

Based on H. G. Wells’ 1897 sci-fi novel The Invisible Man and brought to the big screen by Universal Pictures in 1933, the film was directed by James Whale and starred Claude Rains, Gloria Stuart, William Harrigan, Dudley Digges, Una O’Connor, Henry Travers and Forrester Harvey.

Back in 2008, The Invisible Man finally received the love it deserves as it was selected for the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
