‘Insidious: The Red Door’ Tops 2023 Horror Film Box Office

This door has swung wide open.

Insidious: The Red Door–the fifth installment in the horror franchise–reached an enviable milestone this weekend, becoming the highest-grossing horror film of 2023.

Passing the successful M3GAN horror feature at the box office, The Red Door now boasts a global take of $182.5 million. The film’s success can be traced to strong overseas numbers, especially in Mexico and the UK.

The Blumhouse/Sony flick–directed by star Patrick Wilson from a screenplay by Scott Teems–serves as a direct sequel to 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2. Original director James Wan and Jason Blum produced the film.

The cast is led by returning stars Wilson, Ty Simpkins, Rose Byrne, Andrew Astor, Steve Coulter, Joseph Bishara, Angus Sampson and Lin Shaye–alongside newcomers Sinclair Daniel and Hiam Abbass.

In the feature, Josh Lambert (Wilson) heads east to drop off son Dalton (Simpkins) at college, but Dalton’s dream becomes a living nightmare “when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both.”
