Does this lion have all its teeth?
Beast–the Universal Pictures survival thriller–had a relatively tame preview last night, earning less than $1 million, according to a report in Deadline.
The film–starring Golden Globe Award winner Idris Elba–previewed in almost 3,000 theaters and pulled in just $925,000, despite scoring 72 percent fresh among Rotten Tomatoes critics.
In the R-rated movie–directed by Baltasar Kormakur (Everest) from a screenplay by Ryan Engle (Rampage)–Dr. Nate Daniels (Elba), a recent widower, returns to South Africa–where he met his wife–on a trip with his daughters. They’re headed for a game preserve managed by family friend Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley), but things take a terrifying turn for the worse.
What starts out as a journey of healing becomes “a fearsome fight for survival when a lion–a survivor of poachers that now sees all humans as the enemy–begins stalking them,” according to the synopsis.
Beast–which also stars Iyana Halley, Leah Saya Jeffries and Riley Keough–is produced by Will Packer and James Lopez, with Jaime Primak Sullivan and Bernard Bellew as executive producers.
