Horror News Network’s Comic Awards 2019: Best Anthology

by Nick Banks

Horror News Network’s Best Anthology of 2019 is Warwick Johnson-Callwell’s Our Encounters With Evil: Adventures of Professor J.T. Meinhardt and His Assistant Mr. Knox from Dark Horse Comics.

The sequel to Johnson-Callwell’s and Mike Mignola’s original Dark Horse Comics graphic novel Mr. Higgins Comes Home is a fun, unique take on classic gothic storytelling featuring the return of the witty professor and his stalwart assistant (along with Madam Mary Van Sloan, who provides a more forceful presence when it comes to dealing with monsters).  Unlike the original, Our Encounters With Evil is broken up into a series of  stand-alone short tales which highlight the quirky team and their inevitable encounters with vampires, werewolves, and other creatures of the night.

Johnson-Callwell described his approach to the new collection in an exclusive interview with Horror News Network, stating that he “…love(s) horror cinema; there’s a lot of it and a lot to love.   Lots of it’s great and lots of it isn’t, but there’s almost always some spark or idea that strikes a chord.  We are relying a lot on stereotypical characters and disturbing events in these books to one extent or another.   So what I wanted to try to make sure was that there are enough surprises, new ideas or at least left turns instead of right, to make the stories feel somewhat refreshing to read.”

Our Encounters With Evil is currently available at finer comic book shops and book stores everywhere.
