Horror News Network 2021 Comic Awards: Best Artist Of The Year

by Thomas Tuna

First and foremost, as every discerning fan knows, comics is a visual medium.

Great artwork can elevate a pedestrian script, and poor illustrations can doom an award-winning writer. That being said, Horror News Network’s 2021 Best Artist of the Year Award goes to Valerio Giangiordano–primarily for his exemplary efforts on Image Comics’ Two Moons horror series.

Not to say John Arcudi’s script is anything less than stellar. The story is a gripping terror ride through a painful chapter of American history that Giangiordano’s stunning artwork (aided by the striking colors provided by Dave Stewart) makes all the more believable…and terrifying.

Two Moons follows the long journey of a young Pawnee man named Virgil Morris–also known as Two Moons–fighting for the Union during the bloody Civil War. When he is confronted by his shamanic roots, he discovers horrors far worse than combat–as the ghosts of his past reveal the monstrous evil around him.

Giangiordano’s illustrations of battlefield situations and the various combatants–including monstrous demons–are breathtaking and disturbing, all at the same time. The perfect accompaniment to Arcudi’s sterling storytelling.

Congratulations to Valerio Giangiordano on being selected the Horror News Network 2021 Artist of the Year.
