Horror Film ‘Candy Land’ Set For Release In January

by Jayson Drury

A new slasher for the new year.

Candy Land–a new slasher entry–has been picked up by Quiver Distribution for a Jan. 6, 2023 theatrical and on-demand  release, according to a report on Deadline.

The horror pic premiered at the Locarno Film Festival over the summer, and has continued its way through the circuit, with stops at FrightFest and GrimmFest.

The film–from writer/director John Swab (Ida Red)–follows Remy (Olivia Luccardi) as she flees from a cult and finds herself immersed in the underground world of truck stop sex workers, known as lot lizards, according to the synopsis.

Along the way, she’s befriended by Sadie (Sam Quartin), Riley (Eden Brolin), Liv (Virginia Rand) and Levi (Owen Campbell). In his world, they’re held to a strict code and watched closely by a matriarch, Nora (Guinevere Turner), and a strange lawman, Rex, (Billy Baldwin). But, as luck would have it, things take a dark turn–and people start dying.

Candy Land is my first venture into the horror genre,” Swab said. “While it’s more of a traditional slasher, we wanted it to have no boundaries and to push the limits. I think this film is a lot like the great ’90s cult cinema that inspired me–Bully, Scream, Welcome to the Dollhouse.”
