Looks like rough seas ahead, matey.
Plunder–a seafaring horror comic book series from BOOM! Studios and Jonathan Lang–is being adapted into a feature film by Koulest Productions, according to a report on Deadline.
Miles and Oren Koules of Koulest Productions will produce the film, with Ethan Teller (Jar of Fools) as screenwriter and Oscar-nominated SFX artist Alec Gillis (Prey) on board to oversee the special effects. There has been no word yet on a director or casting choices.
Plunder is described as “a horror story that starts when a gang of Somali pirates face off with an illegal Chinese vessel,” according to the synopsis. The pirates try to board what they believe is a research ship, “only to find themselves in the middle of a massacre, with their worst nightmares becoming reality.”
A 14-year-old boy “who went from translator to reluctant pirate becomes their key to survival, but he must decide how far he’s willing to go in the name of self-preservation.”
Screenwriter Teller said he was “immediately taken by both the concept and storytelling” of the comic book. “Being able to contribute to this feature adaptation of the comic book–alongside Jonathan, Miles and Oren–has been everything I could hope for.”
Miles Koules added that bringing in “special effects wizard Alec Gillis–who redesigned the Predator for Prey–as our first step in development gives this project a whole new depth. This team has the makings of something really special.”
