Disney also announced a truckload of cast members who will join the returning Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy (a popular guest at the recent CT HorrorFest) as the Sanderson Sisters in this sequel to the fan-favorite 1993 original Hocus Pocus.
Those actors include Whitney Peak (Sabrina), Lilia Buckingham (Crown Lake), Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories), Tony Hale (Arrested Development), Juju Brener (Vanquish), Froy Gutierrez (Teen Wolf), Taylor Henderson (Earwig and the Witch), newcomer Nina Kitchen, Doug Jones (reprising his role of Billy Butcherson) and Sam Richardson and Hannah Waddingham from the award-winning Ted Lasso.
Very little about the sequel’s storyline has been revealed at this point, but hints have pointed to a scenario that follows three young woman who accidentally bring the Sanderson Sisters back to modern-day Salem and who must find a way to “stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on the world.”
Anne Fletcher–who is directing the sequel from a screenplay by Jen D’Angelo–said she was “so grateful to be able to play a part in bringing these witches back to life. And to be working with Disney again makes it all the more special.”
The original Hocus Pocus–directed by Kenny Ortega from a screenplay by Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert–follows the witchy Sanderson Sisters after they were resurrected on Halloween night in Salem, Mass. The movie received less-than-stellar reviews and reportedly lost $16 million overall for Disney, but has become a Halloween staple through the years.
