Are you ready to return to Derry?

HBO Max this week officially greenlit Welcome to Derry–a prequel series to the two It feature films based on the Stephen King horror classic, according to a report on Deadline.

The series is currently being developed by filmmakers Andy and Barbara Muschietti (It, It Chapter Two) and Jason Fuchs (It Chapter Two).

The horror master himself chimed in on the good news. “I’m excited that the story of Derry–Maine’s most haunted city–is continuing,” King said, “And I’m glad Andy Muschietti will oversee the frightening festivities–along with his talented sister Barbara. Red balloons all around!”

Welcome to Derry–which reportedly could take place over the course of centuries–will be set primarily in the 1960s and will explore the backstory of Pennywise the Clown and the curse over the town of Derry–the community made famous by King’s 1986 novel and the 2017 and 2019 films.

The original It feature–directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman–tells the horrifying story of The Losers’ Club, a group of seven outcast children who are terrorized by Pennywise.
