Halle Berry is getting into the “spirit” of the horror genre.
Mother Land–a new supernatural thriller from 21 Laps–will start shooting next year with Oscar winner Halle Berry in the lead, according to a report in Deadline. Lionsgate will handle sales at next week’s Cannes market.
The new film–directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) from a screenplay by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby–follows a mother (Berry) and her twin sons “who have been tormented by an evil spirit for years,” according to the logline. “When one of the boys questions whether the evil is real, the family’s scared bond is broken–and it becomes a fight for survival.”
Aja will also produce the movie, alongside Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine. Berry and Holly Jeter will serve as executive producers.
Lionsgate production president Erin Westerman is “thrilled” to be working with the film’s star and director. “Halle is a force on screen,” she said. “She’s the perfect person to convey the psychological terror of this mother trying to protect her family. And who better than Alexandre to ratchet up the tension.”
