The Big Fella with the radioactive personality is back–and IDW Publishing and Toho International, Inc. are teaming up to show off Godzilla in a brand-new line of comic books and games.
This multi-year deal between the two companies–as announced by The Hollywood Reporter–is well-timed for the giant lizard, with the much-hyped big screen Godzilla vs. Kong on its way to a waiting world next spring. That monstrous Clash of the Titans, as reported here in Horror News Network, is slated to hit theaters and HBO Max simultaneously May 21, 2021.
The first project for this partnership will hit comic book store shelves (and be available digitally) just in time to whet fans’ appetites for more of Godzilla. The five-issue comic book series–courtesy of Erik Burnham, Dan Schoening and Luis Antonio Delgado–is scheduled to debut in April 2021.
This comic book series is just the tip of the iceberg, however. The deal calls for Godzilla–as well as friends and foes Rodan, Mothra, King Ghidorah and several others–to grace additional comics, art books, journals, puzzles and (for the younger set) coloring books. IDW also will handle worldwide distribution of these products–except for certain Asian markets.
This isn’t the first time Godzilla has rampaged his way through the comic book world, of course. IDW has a track record with the legendary behemoth–having published Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla: The Half–Century War from 2011-2016.
IDW publisher Nachie Marsham is going into this collaboration with high hopes. “We’re very excited to work with Toho to build a comprehensive array of stories and products that Godzilla fans everywhere can enjoy,” Marsham said. “Their library of characters are titans of pop culture, and we can’t wait for people to get their hands on what we’re creating.”
Lora Cohn, Toho managing director, was every bit as optimistic about the undertaking. “IDW has been such a fantastic partner in bringing Godzilla characters to life through high-quality graphic storytelling,” she said, “and we’re excited to take our relationship to the next level.”
