Fans of the Gremlins films have long been waiting for another addition to the franchise with Gremlins 3 still up in the air and Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, an animated series coming to HBO Max, yet to announce a release date. Mogwai enthusiasts can now get their Gizmo fix thanks to Mountain Dew Zero Sugar’s new commercial, which can be seen below.
It’s been thirty-one years since we last saw Billy (Zach Galligan) and Gizmo (voiced by Howie Mandel) together in 1990’s Gremlins: The New Batch. Billy Peltzer and Gizmo are all grown up now, with the Mogwai showing his age with gray in his fur. In this Gremlins universe, Billy is the dad of a teen daughter who gives off strong Wednesday Adams vibes and sports her very own Mogwai on her shoulder.
One of the cardinal rules of caring for a Mogwai is that they aren’t supposed to get wet, so when Gizmo spills his Mountain Dew Zero Sugar all over himself, and Mogwai begin to pop out of his back, it’s pretty clear that shenanigans are about to ensue.
The tag line at the end of the Mountain Dew Zero Sugar commercial reads: As Good as the Original, Maybe Even Better? Does this lead us to believe that there will be more coming from the Gremlins universe? Fans can only hope.
