First Victim in ‘Jaws,’ Susan Backlinie Dies

by Rob Caprilozzi

We have sad news to pass along today as we have learned that Susan Backlinie has died at the age of 77, according to a report on The New York Times.

Everyone will remember her as the killer sharks first on-screen victim in Jaws. While she was only on screen for around three minutes, her performance as Chrissie Watkins will never be forgotten.

As the shark grabbed her legs and proceeded to drag her around, Chrissie tried desperately to save herself; by grabbing onto a buoy, but she was swiftly dragged underwater and eaten. It’s still considered to be the most famous and well-known scene in the Jaws franchise.

In addition to Jaws, Backlinie has also appeared in Day of the Animals, 1941, Terror in the Aisles, The Grizzly and the Treasure, The Fall Guy and The Great Muppet Caper.

Backlinie loved the water and would swim for miles off the coast and in local pools. While in high school, she was the state freestyle swimming champ.

We here at Horror News Network send out condolences to Susan’s friends and family.
