Renfield–the decidedly different take on Dracula’s lackey–is just three months away from hitting theaters, and the first trailer dropped this week to shed some light on this updated twist on the classic characters. Check out the video on this page.
The R-rated Universal Pictures horror-comedy–directed by Chris McKay from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley–stars Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, “the loyal, tortured aide of Dracula who has been forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding,” according to the synopsis.
But now, Renfield wants a life “outside the shadow of the Prince of Darkness–if only he can figure out how to end his co-dependency.” From the looks of the trailer, therapy may not be the answer.
Nicolas Cage plays the undead Lord of Vampires, and it sounds like this is a role he can truly sink his teeth into. “If you’re playing Dracula,” he said, “you have a lot of latitude. What can I get away with here?”
The feature–which hits the big screen April 14–also stars Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shoreh Aghdashloo, Bess Rous and James Moses Black.
