Fandango Lists Most-Anticipated Horror Movies Of 2023

Be afraid. Be very afraid of 2023.

By all accounts, 2022 was a banner year for horror on the big screen, and 2023 is shaping up as another fright fest. And, to prepare the legions of horror fans for the thrills and chills to come, digital movie ticket retailer Fandango has made a list of who is naughty…and who is naughtier.

The retailer’s list of next year’s most-anticipated horror films is topped by one movie that does not yet have a release date–the latest big-screen take on the Stephen King horror classic Salem’s Lot. The R-rated feature–from writer/director Gary Dauberman–stars Lewis Pullman as author Ben Mears, who returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot to find inspiration for his next novel. But what he finds is the town overrun by vampires.

The second most-anticipated horror film is Insidious: Fear the Dark, the next installment in the popular franchise. This movie–slated for theatrical release July 7–is directed by Patrick Wilson (who also reprises his Josh Lambert role) from a screenplay by Scott Teems.

Next on the list is The Exorcist sequel (the first of a planned trilogy) that hits theaters Oct. 13. This film–directed by David Gordon Green–stars Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd and the returning Ellen Burstyn in a tale that deals with “the father (Odom) of a possessed child who tracks down Chris MacNeil (Burstyn),” according to the brief logline.

The next most-anticipated pic is Scream VI–in theaters March 10–that’s directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. In this latest Scream entry, the survivors of the last Ghostface killings leave Woodsboro for New York City. Any guesses who follows them?

Rounding out the top 5 most-anticipated horror films of 2023 is M3GAN, which hits the big screen in just a couple of weeks–Jan. 6. Directed by Gerard Johnstone from a screenplay by Akela Cooper, the feature follows Gemma (Allison Williams), a roboticist at a toy company who develops a doll “that’s programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally.” Don’t expect this to work out well.
