Werewolf by Night–the Marvel Studios Halloween special now streaming on Disney+–went back to basics to create the monstrous effects seen on the screen. Makeup and SFX artist Howard Berger wanted to use practical effects throughout the show, and his Instagram post–courtesy of Screen Rant–on this page shows some of the creatures of the night he and his team concocted.

The hour-long black-and-white special–directed by Michael Giacchino from a screenplay by Peter Cameron and Heather Quinn–stars Gael Garcia Bernal as Jack Russell (aka the werewolf), Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone and Harriet Sansom Harris as Verusa–along with Marvel’s shambling swamp creature, Man-Thing.
The show follows a secret cabal of monster hunters who gather at Bloodstone Castle–following the death of Ulysses Bloodstone–and who are thrust into a “mysterious and deadly competition for the powerful Bloodstone, a hunt that brings them face-to-face with a dangerous monster,” according to the synopsis.
Executive producer Brian Gay said the special shows that “for centuries, there have been monsters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they’ve been tracked or hunted–or kept at bay–by these hunters.”
