The movie did bloody well.

Evil Dead Rise–the latest entry in the classic horror franchise–enjoyed a strong opening weekend at the domestic box office, according to a report on Deadline.

The film–which posted a favorable B CinemaScore–earned $23.6 million this weekend from 3,400 theaters, ranking second only to the animated box office smash Super Mario Bros Movie. Read Rob Caprilozzi’s review of Evil Dead Rise here.

The R-rated pic–from writer/director Lee Cronin–follows Beth (Lily Sullivan) as she visits her older sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) in her Los Angeles apartment. But things go south when the sisters discover a mysterious book deep in the bowels of the apartment building.

This book unleashed an army of demons that forces Beth to fight for her very survival–as she faces “the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.”

Joining Sullivan and Sutherland in the cast are Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, Mia Challis and Tai Wano.
