Ethan Hawke Believes In Plans For ‘Black Phone’ Sequel

The Grabber is all in for this one.

The sequel to one of 2022’s most successful horror entries–The Black Phone–is being planned for a summer 2025 release, with most of the original cast already in place.  And one of those stars seems anxious to get the ball rolling.

During a recent chat with Screen Rant when Hawke discussed his frightening character of The Grabber, the actor admitted he “has no idea” what to expect this time around. I have no idea what I’m trying to explore with my life.”

Hawke expounded on this, saying, “As a performer, I have a love for all those different genres and ways to tell stories, and I’ve spent my life trying to push myself to different kinds of things. And director Scott Derrickson is really brilliant–so if he asks me to do something, I’ll do it.”

Derrickson will write the sequel with past collaborator C. Robert Cargill, but it has not yet been confirmed if he will return to the director’s chair. But, given Hawke’s recent comments, it seems a strong possibility.

The sequel–slated to hit theaters June 27, 2025–will see Mason Thames (as Finney Shaw), Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies and Miguel Mora return to the cast with Hawke.

Blumhouse’s original The Black Phone–helmed by Derrickson from a screenplay he wrote with Cargill–finds young Finney Shaw being abducted and trapped in a soundproof basement by The Grabber. But, when a disconnected black phone starts to ring, the boy discovers he can hear the voices of the killer’s past victims–voices that want to “make sure what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.”
