Doug Bradley On New Pinhead In Upcoming ‘Hellraiser’ Reboot

by Thomas Tuna

The passing of the torch is never easy.

Doug Bradley has played the horror icon Pinhead in eight Hellraiser films, but a new actor–Jamie Clayton–will step into the key role for the upcoming Hulu reboot of Clive Barker’s classic. So, that begs the question: How does Bradley feel about that?

Well, during a recent appearance at a convention, Bradley did not seem surprised a woman would be playing the part this time around. “It seemed like (a female Pinhead) was coming,” he said. “It’s an interesting piece of casting– an interesting decision.”

Bradley expounded on that notion, saying, “We say ‘female Pinhead’ like we know what that means–but there are a million shades of femininity. Where exactly are they going to go with that?”

Everything about Hellraiser, he added, “has always been transgressive. Everything–from start to finish. It’s not a new idea in that sense, but I’m intrigued. I’m in the same position as everyone to see where that goes.”

The reimagining of the 1987 film–slated for an Oct. 7 debut on Hulu–reportedly will have the iconic puzzle box fall into the hands of a young woman dealing with addiction–and who will now have to deal with the Cenobites.

The R-rated remake from Spyglass Media Group is directed by David Bruckner from a screenplay by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski (based on a story by David S. Goyer). The cast includes Clayton as Pinhead, Odessa A’zion, Brandon Flynn, Goran Visnjic, Drew Starkey, Adam Faison, Aolfe Hinds and Hiam Abbass.

The original Hellraiser–written and directed by Clive Barker (and based on his 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart)–deals with a mystical puzzle box that summons the Cenobites, sadomasochistic beings–led by Pinhead–who don’t know the difference between pleasure and pain.
