Tom Cruise may have been the box office top gun this weekend, but two genre films showed plenty of fight.
Jurassic World Dominion–the long-awaited next installment in the blockbuster franchise–won’t open globally until this coming Friday, June 10, but it enjoyed a very strong debut in offshore markets this weekend.
The Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment entry raked in an impressive $55.5 million through Sunday, with Dominion breaking records as the franchise’s best opening in Mexico, Argentina, Central America, Peru, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador and Uruguay.
Dominion–directed by Colin Trevorrow from a screenplay he wrote with Emily Carmichael–will stomp its way into theaters in North America, China and 58 other markets next weekend
In addition, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness still made waves–and news–in its fifth weekend. The Sony and Marvel sequel broke the $900-million global barrier–checking in with nearly $910 million through Sunday. The Sam Raimi-directed film has now earned $389 million domestically and another $521 million from the international box office.
