Here there be monsters.
Werewolf by Night–the upcoming Disney Halloween special–is just weeks away, and a much more detailed synopsis has dropped that sheds some welcome light on the mysterious scene, according to a report on comicbook.com.
The one-hour show–which lands on Disney+ Oct. 7–stars Gael Garcia Bernal in the title role and Laura Donnelly in what seems to be the role of the so-called Vampire by Night from Marvel Comics. But the storyline departs from the Marvel comics after that, and drifts into some hardcore horror.
The special–directed by Michael Giacchino and written by Peter Cameron (Moon Knight, WandaVision) and Heather Quinn (Hawkeye)–is inspired by the horror films of the 1930s and ’40s, and aims to “evoke a sense of dread and the macabre in a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” Disney said in a statement.
The special is set “on a dark and somber night,” according to the synopsis, “when a secret cabal of monster hunters emerges from the shadows and gathers at the Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader.”
During a “strange and macabre memorial to the leader’s life, the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic–a hunt that will ultimately bring them face-to-face with a dangerous monster.”
The original Marvel Comics Werewolf by Night (Jack Russell) character–created by writers Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway and artist Mike Ploog–first appeared in Marvel Spotlight No. 2 in 1972, and eventually earned his own title that ran for 43 issues until 1977.
