The misunderstood monster is getting a makeover.
A new version of Mary Shelley’s iconic Frankenstein is expected to start shooting next February, and this week, a synopsis and cast roles were revealed by What’s on Netflix.
The new film–written and directed by Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro–does not yet have a debut date on Netflix, but it will reportedly be set in 19th-Century eastern Europe and will follow Dr. Pretorius, “who is tracking down Dr. Frankenstein’s monster–who is believed to have died in a fire 40 years ago.”
In the film, as reported, Andrew Garfield will play Dr. Frankenstein, Oscar Isaac will portray the monster and Mia Goth will play the Bride. The all-star genre cast is rounded out by Christoph Waltz, who may play Dr. Pretorius.
This is a project del Toro “has been wanting to do for 50 years,” the filmmaker said, “ever since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany. This is a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools–I couldn’t have done it 10 years ago.”
