The fourth season of the wildly popular Stranger Things Netflix series is still filming in Atlanta–with no specific debut date yet announced–but one of the show’s stars recently dropped a few crumbs to the starving fan base.
David Harbour–who has played Police Chief Jim Hopper since the show’s inception in 2016–said in an interview that Season 4 drew inspiration from a couple of seemingly dissimilar classic films–Alien 3 and The Great Escape, according to comicbook.com.
Harbour said that in discussions about the upcoming season with the show’s creators and showrunners, Matt and Ross Duffer, “we talked about The Great Escape and Alien 3 as influences. In terms of Hopper, you get to see a lot of backstory that has only been hinted at. As opposed to the dad he’s become, you’ll unearth more of the warrior he had been.”
The actor added that he feels Season 4 is “super exciting. It’s gone to a whole other place. It started out in Season 1 with this small town police chief, and now it’s become this sprawling thing with a Russian prison and a monster.”
Harbour also said he finally got to film a scene “that plays very big in this season that I’ve known since the first frame of the first season. It’s so satisfying to have had an idea five years prior (and) we’re going to lay it out finally, and it’s really cool.”
That first season of Stranger Things–led by the Duffer Brothers and executive producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen–introduced the small town of Hawkins, Ind. in the 1980s and showed how the residents dealt with the supernatural threats of the alternate dimension known as The Upside Down. The series has gone on to garner 39 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, with six wins.
