With the success of The Conjuring 2, New Line is already planning a spinoff featuring the villain of the film, a demonic nun. David Leslie Johnson, co-writer on Conjuring 2, will be writing the film. Director James Wan and Peter Safran, who produced the films, will be reuniting to produce the spinoff.
The demonic nun character didn’t actually exist until three months before Conjuring 2 opened. She was added during last-minute reshoots after Wan decided on the new concept, rather than the original demonic figure with horns that was being used.
The Nun is the second series to spinoff from the Conjuring series. Annabelle, released in 2014, was the first spinoff, and has it’s own sequel in production for 2017.
The Conjuring 2 was the No.1 film in North American and internationally, outside of China, this past weekend. It was also the biggest horror film opening ever for 30 markets, which included Australia, Mexico, Brazil, all of Latin America and most markets in Asia. Just give days after its release, the film has already grossed over $100 million worldwide.
