Cassandra Peterson On Elvira: She Can “Go On Without Me”

by Thomas Tuna

Horror fans can only hope that the sultry, sexy and scary Elvira is immortal.

And, from what her alter ego, Cassandra Peterson–recently said, that may indeed be possible. In a manner of speaking.

Peterson–who was recently seen in Rob Zombie’s The Munsters and teaming up with Joe Bob Briggs on a Shudder special–told Variety that she thinks she’ll retire some day, “but I don’t think Elvira will ever retire. Elvira can go on without me, even if I die–which I will at some point. I think the character will continue to be around.”

But, Peterson doesn’t think another woman could handle the vampy part forever. “If I did a Broadway show, I think someone else could play me, but I don’t think she would permanently become Elvira,” she said. “I’d love to have somebody do that, but I don’t think it would work.”

Peterson–who’s obviously not ready to hang up that slinky black dress anytime soon–also named her favorite horror films headlined by other femme fatales. She said her top five are Carrie (Sissy Spacek), Dracula’s Daughter (Gloria Holden), Rosemary’s Baby (Mia Farrow), The Exorcist (Linda Blair) and Attack of the 50-Foot Woman (Allison Hayes).
