Casey La Scala to Direct ‘Amityville 1974’ Prequel for Wonderfilm Media

Sequels to The Amityville Horror haven’t exactly been successful in recent years, so Wonderfilm Media are going to take the franchise into a different direction: the past.

Deadline reports that the folks at Wonderfilm have officially greenlit Amityville 1974, a prequel story which takes place before the Lutz family’s supernatural experience in the famous Long Island house. Casey La Scala will direct the film based on his original script. La Scala produced films like Donnie Darko and Amityville: The Awakening, and he last wrote and directed a 2014 film titled The Remaining.

Just like how the original movie (and the Jay Anson book which inspired it) weaved a true story (depending on who you ask) into a glossy horror narrative, this upcoming prequel will focus on the real-life DeFeo murders which took place inside the house. La Scala had this to say about the film’s premise:

“This is a story that takes its jumping-off point from the true facts surrounding the DeFeo tragedy, but also focuses on the human drama that took place inside a family as they were relentlessly stalked by a terrifying evil.”

Time will tell if the new time period and subject matter will make Amityville a cultural phenomenon once more. Given the nation’s fascination with true crime stories, La Scala just may have found the right formula for a reboot.
