Can The ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Reach The Billion-Dollar Mark?

by Thomas Tuna

The magical journey continues.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness–the Sam Raimi-directed powerhouse sequel to the 2016 Marvel hit–is close to a major milestone, according to a report on Deadline.

The horror-tinged film this week crossed the $400-million mark domestically, and now stands at more than $935 million worldwide (with $535 million pouring in from overseas markets). Given those figures, it’s not inconceivable that the sequel will reach the $1-billion mark before its theatrical run ends.

That may be overly optimistic, though, if some industry analysts are correct. Since the film has not released in China or Russia, experts predict a $950-million payday when all is said and done. Still, not too shabby.

The sequel–helmed by Raimi (of Evil Dead fame) and written by Michael Waldron (Loki)–stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen and Benedict Wong. In the film, Strange protects America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez)–a teenager capable of traveling through the Multiverse–from Wanda Maximoff (Olsen).
