Genre filmmaker Ben Wheatley–who recently signed on to helm the sequel to The Meg (as reported here in Horror News Network)–has another horror film on his plate.
In The Earth–a timely horror film shot during the COVID-19 pandemic–just wrapped production and is slated for a theatrical release sometime in 2021, as reported by comingsoon.net.
Neon produced and is distributing the movie, expected to be shopped at next week’s American Film Market by Protagonist, which will share exclusive footage with prospective buyers.
In The Earth–written and directed by Wheatley–is set in a world searching for a cure to a deadly virus (sound familiar?). A scientist and a park ranger travel through a forest on what should have been a routine equipment run, but which turns into a terrifying trek as the forest comes to horrible life around them.
The film stars Joel Fry (Game of Thrones), Ellora Torchia (Midsommar), Hayley Squires (I, Daniel Blake) and Reece Shearsmith (Psychoville). Andy Starke and Tom Quinn produced the movie, alongside executive producer Jeff Deutchman.
Wheatley also has helmed such genre films as Kill List, Sightseers and Tomb Raider 2, and recently worked on a remake of the classic Rebecca for Netflix.
