‘Army Of The Dead’ Recognized With Fan-Favorite Oscar

by Thomas Tuna

The horror genre got a taste of the Oscar spotlight this year.

Army of the Dead–Zack Snyder’s popular zombie film–won out over some stiff competition at this past weekend’s Academy Awards ceremony and took home the brand-new Fan-Favorite Oscar, as reported by Variety.

The new award was introduced this year in an attempt to honor more mainstream, popular films and box-office hits that are all-too-often overlooked by the Academy. Twitter users cast their ballots for their favorites, and Army of the Dead beat out such celebrated films as SpiderManNo Way HomeDune and The Power of the Dog.

Army of the Dead–directed by Snyder from a screenplay he wrote with Shay Hatten and Joby Harold–is set during the days following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas and follows a band of mercenaries during a daring casino heist. Naturally, zombies get in the way.

The film–described as a “spiritual sequel” to Dawn of the Dead–stars Dave Bautista, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ella Purnell, Huma Qureshi, Tig Notaro, Ana de la Reguera, Garret Dillahunt, Matthias Schweighofer and Omari Hardwick.

With a sequel (Planet of the Dead) planned for Army of the Dead, keep reading Horror News Network for all the updates.
