The Joker’s getting a new playmate.
Joker: Folie a Deux–the follow-up to the 2019 box office juggernaut–continues to add key pieces to its ensemble. This week, Jabob Lofland (the Maze Runner franchise) signed on the dotted line for what is described as a “key role,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Lofland reportedly will play an inmate in Arkham Asylum who develops a relationship with Arthur Fleck (aka the Joker), played by Joaquin Phoenix.
The sequel–from Warner Bros, and DC Films–already has Lady Gaga (as Harley Quinn) and Zazie Beetz (as Sophie Dumond) to star alongside Phoenix–as well as Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson in as-yet-unidentified roles.
The new film–directed by the returning Todd Phillips from a screenplay he wrote with Scott Silver–is expected to start shooting in December with an eye toward an Oct. 4, 2024 debut.
The original Joker follows failed clown and aspiring stand-up comedian Fleck, whose descent into madness leads him to the persona of the Joker. The movie became the first R-rated pic to earn more than $1 billion at the box office, earning Phoenix a Best Actor Oscar in the process.
