Anne Rice–Famed Author Of ‘The Vampire Chronicles’–Passes Away

by Thomas Tuna

Horror fans this weekend are mourning the tragic loss of Anne Rice, one of the contemporary giants of the genre and of the written word.

Rice–perhaps best known for The Vampire Chronicles novels and Lives of the Mayfair Witches seriespassed away at the age of 80 due to complications resulting from a stroke, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Rice’s son Christopher took to social media to break the sad news, writing his mother passed “almost 19 years to the day after my father died. The immensity of our family’s grief cannot be overstated. Let us take comfort in the shared hope that Anne is now experiencing firsthand the glorious answers to many great spiritual and cosmic questions.”

Rice reportedly will be interred in her family’s mausoleum at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans in a private ceremony. A celebration of her life–open to the public–is planned for next year in New Orleans.

Rice authored nearly 40 novels that sold more than 150 million copies worldwide. She also wrote the screenplay for the 1994 big-screen adaptation of Interview with the Vampire–starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt–that served as perhaps the best introduction of her work to the general public. Six of her other novels, including Queen of the Damned and Exit to Eden (written under the pen name Anne Rampling), were adapted to the screen.

AMC is currently filming the small-screen eight-episode first season of Interview with the Vampire, scheduled to debut sometime next year. In addition, AMC recently gave a series order to The Lives of the Mayfair Witches, which is expected to air late in 2022, after Interview.

Rice–born Howard Allen Frances O’Brien–began her professional writing career with the 1976 publication of Interview with the Vampire, a novel that was not well-received by some critics and caused Rice to retreat temporarily from the supernatural genre. But her subsequent efforts–The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned–cemented her place among the horror elite.

The staff of Horror News Network extends its heartfelt condolences to Rice’s family and friends.
