Alan Rickman to Star in Gothic Thriller ‘The Limehouse Golem’

by Lynn Sorel

Alan Rickman is going to star in the upcoming adaptation of the 1994 Peter Ackroyd novel of the same name, ‘The Limehouse Golem’.  Douglas Booth (The Riot Club) and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) co-star. Juan Carlos Medina is directing and Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service) penned the screenplay.  The story takes place in Victorian-Era London and centers around the dangerous Limehouse District, where series of gruesome murders were rumored to be the work of a mythical Golem.  Historical figures Karl Marz and Georgie Gissing appear in the novel as well.

Lionsgate has picked up the U.K. distibution rights from production company Number 9 Films.  Stephen Woolley (Number 9 Films), Elizabeth Karlsen (Carol) and Joanna Laurie are producing the film.  Wooley said the story had a “more sensational twist than The Crying Game” and added  “Having two films in competition in Cannes this year is a total thrill for Elizabeth and me,   and we are privileged to be once again working with world-class filmmakers like Alan Rickman and Jane Goldman and the sensational director,   Juan Carlos Medina, and stars of the future Olivia Cooke and Douglas Booth on this Gothic masterpiece.”
