Alamo Drafthouse to Screen ‘It’ Exclusively for Clowns Amid Massive Box Office Predictions

by John Evans

At the start of the summer, the Alamo Drafthouse generated a lot of buzz by offering a screening of Wonder Woman exclusively for women. Many people loved the idea, but there was some pushback from disgruntled male fans who weren’t invited to the party. This September, the theater chain’s flagship Austin location will carry on its new tradition with an exclusive screening that nearly everyone will agree on: a clown-only screening of It!

That’s right, this event will afford everyone the priceless opportunity to see the highly anticipated movie while dressed as a clown and surrounded by clowns! This particular screening will occur on Saturday, September 9th at 7:00 PM. Every other screening will be (mostly) clown-free, if you want to leave your greasepaint at home. Here is the official description of the event, from the Alamo Drafthouse event website:

“For this special Clown screening of IT, all attendees should arrive dressed as a clown in order to attend. Please arrive early and join us in the Barrel O’ Fun beginning at 5:30pm for an IT pre-party where we will have face-painters available for clown “touch-ups”, a photo booth, raffles for prizes, and other terrifying merriment. Please arrive in your own Pennywise best and be ready to float with us.”

Speaking of  what “floats,” the film is expected to float to the top of the charts by generating massive business on its opening weekend. Box office predictions have been rising from $50 million to $60 million in recent days. Should the film actually end up hitting these numbers, it would instantly reach to top of the charts for highest grossing horror films, especially highest grossing R-Rated horror films. The movie has everything going for it: it’s based on a beloved Stephen King classic, its trailers look legitimately scary and interesting, and clowns have been the focus a national fixation over the past year due to unusual real-life appearances in news stories last fall. It seems like the sky is the limit for Pennywise this September!
